Hearings in the Supreme Court are now shown live on the Court’s website.

On Monday 23 April, the Supreme Court will hear the appeal of R (AR) v Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police & Anor (further hearing). This appeal is considering whether the disclosure of details of a rape acquittal in an Enhanced Criminal Record Certificate (ECRC) violates the presumption of innocence protected by ECHR, art 6(2). It is also considering whether an appellate court should determine the issue of proportionality for itself, whether disclosure of an acquittal is disproportionate where full details of the evidence at trial are not obtained and the allegations are not established on the balance of probabilities, and whether disclosure of an acquittal in an ECRC is in accordance with law when no independent review of the information occurs prior to disclosure. This will be heard in Courtroom 2.

On Tuesday 24 April, the Supreme Court will hear the appeal of Banca Nazionale del Lavoro SPA v Playboy Club London Ltd & Ors. This appeal will consider whether a duty of care for a negligent misstatement is capable of arising through an agent for the benefit of an undisclosed principal. This will be heard in Courtroom 2.

On Wednesday 25 until Thursday 26 April, the Supreme Court will hear the appeal of Totel Ltd v Commissioners for HMRC. This appeal will consider whether the payment rule for VAT infringes the EU law principle of equivalence. This will be heard in Courtroom 2.

On Wednesday 25 April, the Supreme Court will hand down the judgment in Newcastle-upon-Tyne Hospital NHS Foundation Trust v Haywood. The hand down panel will be Lady Hale, Lord Wilson and Lady Black. This appeal considered when a notice of termination of a contract of employment becomes effective.

On Thursday 26 April, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council will hear the appeal of De La Haye v Air Mauritius Ltd (Mauritius). This appeal will consider whether the appellant was in the ‘continuous employment’ of the respondent, and whether his employment was unlawfully terminated, such that he was entitled to severance allowance on termination of his employment. This will be heard in Courtroom 3.
