On Tuesday 2 June 2020, Professor Andrew Burrows QC will be sworn in as a Justice of the Supreme Court.
On Wednesday 3 June 2020, the Supreme Court will hand down judgment in Serafin v Malkiewicz & Ors. This appeal will consider, inter alia, the breadth of the public interest defence in the Defamation Act 2013, section 4 and in particular whether the defence is available where the allegations complained of relate to an individual’s private conduct towards a body in relation to which there is a public interest, rather than to the running of that body.
On Wednesday 3 June 2020, the Supreme Court will hear the appeal of Sutherland (AP) v Her Majesty’s Advocate (Scotland). This appeal will consider whether prosecutions based on the covert string operations of “paedophile hunters” are compatible with the right to private life and correspondence.
On Thursday 4 June 2020, the Privy Council will hear the appeal of Byers & Ors v Ningning (British Virgin Islands). The central issue on this appeal is whether the Respondent acted in breach of any fiduciary duty when US$13 million was transferred from Pioneer Freight Futures Company Limited to a third party shortly before the Company entered into provisional liquidation.
