On Monday 17 December, the Supreme Court will hear the preliminary hearing in the case of Reference by the Attorney General for Northern Ireland of devolution issues to the Supreme Court pursuant to Paragraph 34 of Schedule 10 to the Northern Ireland Act 1998 (No 2). This will be heard in Courtroom 2.

On Monday 17 December, the Supreme Court will hand down the judgment in Williams v The Trustees of Swansea University Pension and Assurance Scheme & Anor. The proposed panel for hand down is Lady Hale, Lord Carnwath and Lord Kitchin. This appeal considered the correct meaning of ‘unfavourable treatment’ under the Equality Act 2010, s 15, and the correct approach to justification in that section.

On Monday 17 December, the Supreme Court will hand down the judgment in Welsh Ministers v PJ. The proposed panel for hand down is Lady Hale, Lord Carnwath and Lord Kitchin. This appeal considered whether a statutory power to impose conditions amounting to a deprivation of liberty can ever lawfully be ‘implied’ and whether the framework for Community Treatment Orders provides practical and effective protection for patients’ rights under the ECHR rights. It also considered what the scope is of a tribunal’s power to take into account ECHR rights.

On Monday 17 December, the Supreme Court will hand down the judgment in UKI (Kingsway) Ltd v Westminster City Council & Anor. The proposed panel for hand down is Lady Hale, Lord Carnwath and Lord Kitchin. This appeal considered the validity of the service of a completion notice under the Local Government Finance Act 1988, Sch 4A by the appellant on the respondent.
