Delivering the Lord Williams of Mostyn memorial lecture last night, former law lord Lord Steyn called for the national ID scheme to be scrapped.
The Guardian today reported that Lord Steyn, who retired as a law lord in 2005, called for the abandonment of government’s national identity card scheme when delivering the Lord Williams of Mostyn memorial lecture last night.

, Lord Steyn has been one of the more outspoken retired judges, criticising the UK’s involvement in the Iraq war, anti-terror legislation enacted following the 7/7 bombings, and describing the US regime at Guantánamo Bay as "a stain on American justice".
