Following Lord Sumption’s comments regarding the relative value of a law versus non law degrees the UKSC blog decided to investigate the subjects studied by the Supreme Court Justices at an undergraduate level. It is sometimes fun to imagine what goes on behind the scenes at the Supreme Court, and given that the majority of the Justices studied law as an initial degree, it would be interesting to know their thoughts on Lord Sumption’s comments . . .
Lord Phillips – Law
Lady Hale – Law
Lord Mance – Law
Lord Kerr – Law
Lord Clarke – Law
Lord Reed – Law
Lord Carnwath – Law
Lord Hope – Classics
Lord Walker – Classics and Law
Lord Dyson – Classics
Lord Sumption – History
Lord Wilson – Jurisprudence
Lord Neuberger – Chemistry

Pardon me if I’m wrong, but I do believe if Lord Wilson is to be categorised as having read ‘Jurisprudence’ rather than ‘Law’ on the basis (presumably) that he studied at Oxford (for the BA Jurisprudence), then the other oxonian undergraduate SC Justice ought properly also to be slated as having studied ‘Jurisprudence’: i.e. Lord Mance
