uksc ceilingThree cases were recently granted permission to appeal to the Supreme Court. Firstly, R (Hodkin & Anor) v Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages concerns an appeal against the High Court ruling which upheld the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriage’s decision to refuse to register a chapel of the Church of Scientology as a place of religious worship for the purpose of the appellant’s intended marriage. The Supreme Court appeal is listed for 18 Jul 2013.

In R (T & Anor) v SSHD & Anor the Secretary of State for the Home Department  is appealing the Court of Appeal’s decision that certain provisions regarding criminal records under the Police Act 1997 and the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 are in breach of ECHR, art 8. The hearing is listed for 24 – 25 Jul 2013.

Finally, in R (Wilson & Anor) v Secretary of State for Work and Pensions the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions seeks to overturn the Court of Appeal verdict that the ‘back-to-work scheme’ run under the Jobseeker’s Allowance (Employment, Skills and Enterprise Scheme) Regulations 2011/917 was in breach of provisions made pursuant to the Jobseekers Act 1995. This will take place on 29 Jul 2013.
