Joshua Rozenberg has predicted that the current lord chief justice, Lord Judge, will retire soon – probably in September 2013 when he will have completed five years’ service, and in addition he is expected to serve as treasurer of Middle Temple in 2014. Who is in line to replace him?

Rozenberg thinks the most likely candidates are (in alphabetical order):

Lady Justice Hallet, 62, vice-president of the Queen’s Bench division,

Lord Justice Hughes, 63, vice-president of the criminal division of the Court of Appeal,

Lord Justice Leveson, 63, chairman of the sentencing council (and also presiding over this year’s inquiry into the role of the press and the police in the phone hacking scandal),

Sir John Thomas, 64, president of the Queen’s Bench division.

Other vacancies likely to arise soon include chancellor of the High Court, and Supreme Court positions will open when Lords Hope and Walker reach retirement age next year.
