Sumption QC withdraws from race to Supreme Court

We have discussed the press speculation about the application by Jonathan Sumption QC to become the twelfth justice of the Supreme Court on a number of occasions, see here and here. However, yesterday his Chambers, Brick Court, announced that he had withdraw his candidacy. The announcement reads as follows:
“In view of the press speculation about Jonathan Sumption QC’s candidature for the current vacancy on the Supreme Court, he wishes to say that he was a candidate but has withdrawn his application. He will continue to practise at the Bar.”
The Lawyer, reporting on Mr Sumption QC’s withdrawal here, notes that it is understood that his application met with some hostility from Court of Appeal judges, who felt that he should not be allowed to avoid working his way up the judicial ranks. Press speculation has suggested Lord Justices Lloyd, Dyson and Rix as candidates for the vacancy.
