On Tuesday 21 July 2009 the House of Lords made its final orders on petitions. The House of Lords is no longer sitting and future orders will be made by the Supreme Court when it begins operation.

1    Smith (Appellant) v Northamptonshire County Council (Respondents) Further to the Order of the House of Wednesday 20 May 2009 (32nd Report, Session 2008-09; [2009] UKHL 27) it is ordered that the appellant do pay or cause to be paid to the respondents their costs of the appeal to this House, the amount of such costs to be certified by the Clerk of the Parliaments if not agreed between the parties.

2   A (FC) (Appellant) v Essex County Council (Respondents) (England) The appeal of A was presented and it was ordered that in notwithstanding Standing Order VI the statement and appendix thereto be lodged in the Registry of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom by 1 September. The appellant’s certificate of public funding was lodged (lodged 14 May).

3   R (on the application of HAY) (Respondent) v Her Majesty’s Treasury (Petitioners) The petition of Her Majesty’s Treasury praying for leave to appeal was presented and referred to an Appeal Committee.

4   Highland Crusader Offshore Partners LP and others (Respondents) v Deutsche Bank AG and others (Petitioners) The petition of Deutsche Bank AG and Deutsche Bank Securities Inc praying for leave to appeal was presented and referred to an Appeal Committee.

5   Her Majesty’s Treasury (Respondents) v A (FC) and others (FC) (Appellants) and others

6   Her Majesty’s Treasury (Respondents) v A and others and another (FC) (Appellant) The petition of Justice praying for leave to intervene in the said appeals was presented and referred to an Appeal Committee.

7   Barratt Homes Limited (Respondents) v Dwr Cymru Cyfyngedig (Welsh Water) (Appellants) The appeal was set down for hearing and referred to an Appellate Committee (lodged 16 July).

8   O’Brien (Appellant) v Department for Constitutional Affairs (Respondents) The petition of the appellant praying that the time for lodging the statement and appendix and setting down the cause for hearing might be extended to 30 July or the third sitting day after the next ensuing meeting of the House (the agents for the respondents consenting thereto) was presented; and it was ordered as prayed (lodged 16 July).

9   Tomlinson and others (FC) (Appellants) v Birmingham City Council (Respondents) The petition of the appellants praying that the time for lodging the statement and appendix and setting down the cause for hearing might be extended to 25 September (the agents for the respondent consenting thereto) was presented; and it was ordered as prayed.

10   Gray’s Timber Products Limited (Appellants) v Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (Respondents) (Scotland) The petition of the appellants praying that the time for lodging the statement and appendix and setting down the cause for hearing might be extended to 3 September or the third sitting day after the next ensuing meeting of the House (the agents for the respondents consenting thereto) was presented; and it was ordered as prayed.
