Hearings in the Supreme Court are now shown live on the Court’s website.

On Monday 5 March, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council will hear the appeal of Central Broadcasting Services Ltd & Anor v The AG of Trinidad and Tobago (Trinidad & Tobago). This appeal will consider the assessment of compensatory damages for the State’s failure to award the First Appellant a radio licence (previously held to be unconstitutional by an earlier judgment of the JCPC in Central Broadcasting Services Ltd & Anor v AG of Trinidad and Tobago [2006] UKPC 35). In particular it will consider whether the judge erred in requiring the Court of Appeal to make a fresh assessment in (a) his assessment of the compensatory award and (b) his restriction of costs to one advocate and one restricting attorney. This will be heard in Courtroom 3.

On Tuesday 6 and Wednesday 7 March, the Supreme Court will hear the appeal of James-Bowen & Ors v Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis. This appeal will consider whether a person who is sued in civil litigation for alleged misconduct by his employees (or others for whom he is vicariously liable) owes those employees a duty of care in the conduct of his defence. This will be heard in Courtroom 2.

On Wednesday 7 March, the Supreme Court will hand down the judgment in the case of Iceland Foods Ltd v Berry (Valuation Officer). The hand down panel will be Lord Kerr, Lord Wilson and Lord Carnwath. This appeal considered the proper construction of the exception from non-domestic rating valuations of plant and machinery used or intended to be used in connection with services as part of ‘trade processes’ in the Valuation for Rating (Plant and Machinery) (England) Regulations 2000.

On Thursday 8 March, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council will hear the appeal of Ramsook v Crossley (Trinidad & Tobago). This appeal will consider whether a judgment on liability and award on damages in favour of the Appellant in a personal injury claim should have been set aside on the basis that the Respondent had not been properly served. This will be heard in Courtroom 3.
