On Tuesday 5 March, the Supreme Court will hear the appeal of R (Association of Independent Meat Suppliers & Anor) v Food Standards Agency. This appeal will consider whether there is a right of appeal against an Official Veterinarian’s assessment of the fitness of meat for human consumption where there is a dispute as to its fitness. This will be heard in Courtroom 2.

On Tuesday 5 March, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council will hear the appeal of Maloo & Ors v Somar (Trinidad & Tobago). This appeal will consider whether an agreement for the sale of land contains an implied term that the vendor is required to obtain planning permission for the excision of the land being sold from a larger parcel of land, and whether, if the purchaser applies for the relevant planning permission, such a term is still implied or, if it is implied, it is waived by the purchaser’s actions. This will be heard in Courtroom 3.

On Wednesday 6 March, the Supreme Court will hear the appeal of Commissioners for HMRC v Frank A Smart & Sons Ltd (Scotland). This appeal will consider whether the respondent taxpayer is entitled to deduct the VAT it paid on the acquisitions of single farm payment entitlement. This will be heard in Courtroom 2.

On Wednesday 6 March, the Supreme Court will hand down judgment in In the matter of an application by Hugh Jordan for Judicial Review (Northern Ireland). The proposed panel for hand down is Lady Hale, Lord Reed and Lord Wilson. This appeal considered whether the appellant is permitted to bring a claim under the Human Rights Act 1998, alleging a breach of the requirement of promptness in an investigation into a death contrary to ECHR, art 2, before the inquest has finally concluded.

On Wednesday 6 March, the Supreme Court will hand down judgment in KV (Sri Lanka) v Secretary of State for the Home Department. The proposed panel for hand down is Lady Hale, Lord Reed and Lord Wilson. This appeal considered what the correct approach is to the assessment of medical evidence in asylum claims alleging torture.

On Thursday 7 March, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council will hear the appeal of Darroch v Her Majesty’s Attorney General for the Isle of Man. This appeal will consider whether a decision by the prosecution not to apply for an order for costs against a convicted defendant pursuant to the Criminal Justice Act 1993, s 48 deprives the sentencing court of the jurisdiction to make such an order on application by the prosecution at a subsequent sentencing hearing. This will be heard in Courtroom 3.
