Hearings in the Supreme Court are now shown live on the Court’s website.

On Monday 30 July, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council will hear the appeal of Fishermen and Friends of the Sea v Environmental Management Authority & Ors. This will be heard in Courtroom 3.

On Monday 30 July, the Supreme Court will hand down the judgment in R (Tag Eldin Ramadan Bashir & Ors) v Secretary of State for the Home Department. The proposed panel for hand down is Lady Hale, Lord Mance, Lord Kerr, Lord Wilson, Lord Sumption, Lord Reed and Lord Carnwath. This appeal considered whether the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1967 Protocol extend to the UK’s Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia; and, if so, whether the appellant is required to admit the respondents to the UK for settlement.

On Monday 30 July, the Supreme Court will hand down the judgment in An NHS Trust v Y (by her litigation friend, the Official Solicitor) & Anor. The proposed panel for hand down is Lady Hale, Lord Mance, Lord Kerr, Lord Wilson, Lord Sumption, Lord Reed and Lord Carnwath. This appeal considered whether it is mandatory to bring before the court the withdrawal of Clinically Assisted Nutrition and Hydration from a patient who has a prolonged disorder of consciousness, in circumstances where the clinical team and the family are agreed that it is not in the patient’s best interests that he continues to receive that treatment.

On Monday 30 July, the Supreme Court will hand down the judgment in R (AR) v Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police & Anor. The proposed panel for hand down is Lady Hale, Lord Mance, Lord Kerr, Lord Wilson, Lord Sumption, Lord Reed and Lord Carnwath. This appeal considered whether dsclosure of details of a rape acquittal in an Enhanced Criminal Record Certificate violates the presumption of innocence protected by ECHR, art 6(2). It also considered, regarding ECHR, art 8, whether an appellate court should determine the issue of proportionality for itself; whether disclosure of an acquittal is disproportionate where full details of the evidence at trial are not obtained and the allegations are not established on the balance of probabilities; and whether disclosure of an acquittal in an Enhanced Criminal Record Certificate is in accordance with law when no independent review of the information occurs prior to disclosure.

A new portrait of Lady Hale, President of the Supreme Court, has been unveiled at Gray’s Inn, and is to hang alongside paintings of Lord Bingham and Lord Thomas.
