Hearings in the Supreme Court are now shown live on the Court’s website.

On Tuesday 14 May, the Supreme Court will hear the appeal Sequent Nominees Ltd v Hautford Ltd (a company registered in the British Virgin Islands). This appeal will consider whether the landlord’s refusal to consent to the planning application for change of use was reasonable. This will be heard in Courtroom 2.

On Wednesday 15 May, the Supreme Court will hand down judgment in R (DA & Ors) v Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. The proposed panel for hand down is Lady Hale, Lord Wilson and Lord Carnwarth. This appeal considered whether the application of the revised benefit cap, under the Welfare Reform and Work Act 2016, s 8, to lone parent with children under two years old unlawfully discriminated against the parents and/or the children contrary to the ECHR, art 14 read with art 8 and/or art 2 of the First Protocol. It also considered whether it is discriminatory in that it breaches the UK’s international obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, art 3, and whether it is irrational.

On Wednesday 15 May, the Supreme Court will hand down judgment in R (Privacy International) v Investigatory Powers Tribunal & Ors. The proposed panel for hand down is Lady Hale, Lord Wilson and Lord Carnwarth. This appeal considered whether the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, s 67(8), precludes judicial review of a decision of the Investigatory Powers Tribunal.

On Wednesday 15 May, the Supreme Court will hand down judgment in Telereal Trillium v Hewitt (Valuation Officer). The proposed panel for hand down is Lady Hale, Lord Wilson and Lord Carnwarth. This appeal considered whether regard should be given, when ascertaining the rateable value of a property under the statutory hypothesis in the Local Government Finance Act 1988, Sch 6, para 2(1), to general demand for comparable properties in the market. It also considered what the relevance is, if any, to the ascertainment of rateable value under the statutory hypothesis, of the absence of an actual prospective tenant who would pay a positive prove in order to occupy the property at the valuation date.
