It was reported last night that following the dismissal of his application by the UKSC to re-open extradition proceedings, Julian Assange is seeking political asylum with Ecuador.

The embassy’s statement confirmed that it was reviewing his application “as a signatory to the United Nations Universal Declaration for Human Rights” and would remain under their protection until a decision was reached.

The Guardian helpfully outlines the key events leading up to Assange’s attempts to claim asylum.

There is also the question of bail. Assange’s supporters raised the surety of £240,000 – if he fails to attend court, this may be forfeited.
